Pittsfield Township, OH : Two people died in a double fatality motor vehicle crash on US Route 20 in Lorain County on Tuesday, December 22, 2015

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a double fatality motor vehicle crash here.

At 3:48 p.m. Tuesday, the Lorain County Sheriff's Office received a report of a crash on US Route 20 east of State Route 58. The caller reported there were two vehicles involved with two possible fatalities.

A 2007 Chevy Aveo with two occupants was traveling eastbound on US Route 20.

A 2011 Ford Edge with just a driver was traveling westbound on US Route 20. The Aveo travelled left of center, crossing the center line.

The Edge swerved right to attempt to avoid the crash and was struck head-on by the Aveo. The Aveo came to rest in the westbound lane and the Edge came to rest on the north side of the roadway.

The Aveo driver Leon A. Clowtis, 63, of Norwalk was pronounced dead at the scene. The Aveo's right front passenger Susan M. Clowtis, 59, of Norwalk, was also pronounced dead at the scene.

The Edge's driver, Benny E. Riggs, 75, of Elyria, had to be mechanically extricated from the vehicle. He sustained incapacitating injuries and was taken by LifeFlight to MetroHealth Medical Center. His current condition is unknown.

Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as factors in the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
