Rochester , NY : 49 - Years old womn killed in crash Penske box truck crashed into and over the rear of her car on Friday , January 16h 2015
Debra Douds was stopped on Route 65 at Fourth Street in Ambridge on Friday morning when a Penske box truck crashed into and over the rear of her car, killing her, Ambridge police Chief James Mann said.
Douds, 49, of Rochester, who was on her way to work at the Masonic Village nursing home, was pronounced dead at the scene of the 6:50 a.m. crash.
Beaver County Coroner Teri Tatalovich Rossi said an autopsy showed Douds died instantly from severe internal injuries.
Rich Shroyer, Douds' brother, fought back tears as he talked about his big sister.
“It's going to be hard, but we'll get through it,” he told Trib news partner WPXI-TV.
Several of Douds' friends from Wal-Mart, where she worked, arrived at Shroyer's home with food and drinks. They said they were shocked to learn of her death.
“When I heard, my stomach just dropped. (It's) unbelievable she's gone,” said Ada Henderson.
Mann said police first believed the driver of the truck, Jeremy Ray Hurst, 36, of Pittsburgh fell asleep at the wheel because the truck he was driving pushed the car nearly 260 feet and atop a concrete median.
Hurst, originally of Memphis, is in the Beaver County Jail awaiting extradition to Tennessee. He is wanted there for a probation violation on methamphetamine and theft charges.
“I'm very sorry to the family,” Hurst told WPXI as he was being escorted to a police cruiser.
The truck was rented by Alabeck Commercial Roofing, where Hurst was a driver. Mann said Hurst was not on the clock when the accident occurred. No one answered at the business Friday evening.
The crash closed Route 65 for more than three hours.
Mann said it will take investigators several weeks to determine what happened. Police are awaiting toxicology reports for Hurst. They plan to examine the truck's black box, which includes speed and braking information.
“Ultimately, it will come down to what the district attorney advises us to do,” he said.
