Hazleton, PA : 2 injured after SUV crashes into porch in Tamaqua on Friday night, September 9, 2016
A sport utility vehicle crashed into the porch of a home at 135 Hunter St., Tamaqua, on Friday night, and the driver and passenger were both taken to hospitals, according to borough police.
The passenger was taken by PennStar 5 helicopter to St. Luke’s Hospital in Bethlehem, and the driver was taken by ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital-Miners Campus, Coaldale, according to a supervisor at Schuylkill County Communications Center, Pottsville, and Tamaqua police Patrolman Jeremy J. Sborz.
Sborz would not release the names of the driver or passenger, but said both were women. He said the investigation is continuing.
The incident occurred at 6:21 p.m. Friday, when the women were in a silver GMC Envoy XL, a mid-size, four-door SUV, heading east on Penn Street.
“We believe there was a vehicle malfunction,” Sborz said, but he emphasized the investigation was still ongoing.
The vehicle failed to stop at the stop sign at the T-intersection and drove straight into the concrete porch at 135 Hunter St., a home owned by Charles and Barbara A. Parrish.
They were at home at the time, and they said the concrete pad that makes up their porch prevented the vehicle from driving into their house. They said this is the first time such an incident has occurred on their property.
The vehicle chipped the concrete pad and damaged the railing on the porch. The vehicle was towed.
Responders included Tamaqua firefighters and Lehighton ambulance, according to the communications supervisor.
