BRINNON, WA : 65-year-old man in stable condition at Seattle hospital after crash near Brinnon on Sunday, 2nd October 2016

A 65-year-old man was in stable condition Sunday at Harborview Medical Center after the State Patrol said he drove down an embankment to avoid a head-on collision near Brinnon.

To avoid hitting a vehicle passing in his lane, Ronald Peterson of Brinnon left U.S. Highway 101 to the right and his GMC Jimmy collided with a state Department of Transportation sign, traveled down an embankment and rolled onto his roof, according to the State Patrol.

The wreck was reported at about 10 p.m. Saturday at milepost 310 on Highway 101.

Jeffery Plant, 47, of Penticton, B.C., was unsafely passing another vehicle heading south and was in the northbound lane, according to the State Patrol.

Peterson was airlifted to Harborview on Saturday night, and the hospital’s nursing supervisor said Sunday he was in stable condition.

Plant, who the State Patrol said caused the wreck, was not injured.

Peterson is facing charges for driving under the influence, according to the State Patrol. Charges against Plant, who was driving a Dodge ProMaster van, were pending.

The highway was blocked for about two hours and 15 minutes.
