Eugene, OR : Witness tackles driver for police after car crash into pole on Friday September 16 2016
After a car carrying four people crashed into a power pole Friday night, a witness tackled the driver when he tried to run from the scene, according to Eugene police.
Meanwhile, the crash shut down Echo Hollow Road temporarily, while the Eugene Water and Electric Board repaired the power pole, after EWEB determined it to be a significant risk.
The crash occurred just after 9 p.m. on Royal Avenue near Echo Hollow Road. Eugene police officers were dispatched to the area to investigate a report of a suspected drunken driver.
As one officer was driving west on Royal Avenue approaching Echo Hollow Road, attempting to look for the suspect, Shawn David Quine, 36, of Eugene, was driving east on Royal Avenue. Quine attempted to turn north onto Echo Hollow Road at a high rate of speed, police said.
Quine missed the turn and struck a power pole head on, fracturing it.
The officer quickly parked behind Quine’s vehicle as he was attempting to back it up in an apparent attempt to flee, police said. That’s when Quine reportedly got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene.
A bystander tackled Quine and held him down, enabling officers to arrest Quine, police said. They did not provide the name of the man due to privacy concerns.
Quine’s three passengers, who all suffered minor injuries, also got out of the vehicle; one ran away and was not captured, police said.
While Quine was being handcuffed, police said that he kicked an officer in the leg several times, and he eventually was tased.
