JUNEAU COUNTY, WI : 10 semi-trucks involved in Juneau Co. crash on I-90 near mile marker 69 in the westbound lanes on Wednesday, 23rd January 2019

Poor winter driving is to blame for a multi-vehicle crash that injured two people near Mauston on Wednesday morning.

Sgt. Sawyer with the Wisconsin State Patrol said the crashes happened on I-90 near mile marker 69 in the westbound lanes just before 8:30 a.m. Significant snow had fallen throughout the morning resulting in poor winter driving.

Sawyer said a trooper had just taken the westbound exit from Mauston to respond to a crash when he saw two semi-trucks behind him. The rear semi, loaded with metal piping, crashed into the back of the lead semi, loaded with aluminum bales. The contents of the loads spilled across the road. Eastbound traffic in the westbound lanes slowed down significantly while observing the crash which caused another multi-semi crash. An inattentive westbound semi-truck was unable to stop in time for the original crash, swerved across the median, and crashed head on into another semi-truck that was traveling eastbound.

Sawyer said 10 semi-trucks were involved in these crashes. There were no passenger vehicles involved. Both westbound and eastbound lanes of traffic were completely blocked by spilled cargo, wreckage, and/or jack-knifed semis.
