Coleman, OK : 6-year-old girl hit & killed by car in Coleman Thursday on June 26, 2014
A Texoma town is heartbroken after a little girl was killed by a car Thursday.
She was hit just before noon while crossing a road in Coleman, Oklahoma.
OHP Troopers marked her tiny flip flops where they were found in the middle of Highway 48.
"It's very sad," Coleman resident Tristan Stewart said.
Witnesses say the 6-year-old girl was playing at the community center on the east side of the highway.
They say she tried to cross the road towards a fireworks stand run by her father.
"She entered the roadway and was struck by a southbound 2009 Chevrolet Impala," OHP Captain Ronnie Hampton said.
The girl was taken to a hospital in Durant and was pronounced dead at about 2pm.
The driver of the Impala stopped feet from where she was hit.
Troopers measured the scene to determine if speed was a factor. The say they also imaged the module in the car.
"Which some people refer to as a black box," Capt. Hampton said. "There was no data stored there which means that the threshold of the impact wasn't enough to cause the module to record any data."
Troopers say the driver voluntarily gave blood to test for drugs or alcohol.
"We don't see any indications whatsoever that anyone was impaired," Capt. Hampton said.
"Everybody pray for them and hope they can get through it," Stewart said.
Stewart played basketball for the little girl's father and says for him, family always seemed to come first.
"That was his pride and joy was his family," Stewart said. "I know when he was coaching us, he would leave first thing after school and that was the first thing he'd do is go home and see his family."
No charges have been filed.
No names have been released.
