Anniston, AL : JSU student killed in vehicle accident on Monday, 5th September 2016
A Jacksonville State University student died after sustaining injuries in a two-vehicle accident Monday.
Katie Beth Carter, 18, of Ringgold, Ga., was pronounced dead around 6 p.m. Monday at Grady Memorial Hospital in Georgia, said Jay Bowden, assistant Calhoun County coroner. Bowden said hospital officials notified his office after she had been airlifted from the crash scene in Piedmont.
Bowden said Carter, a JSU student, was driving a 2011 Honda Accord when she collided with an 18-wheeler around 3:40 p.m. at the intersection of Highway 278 and Roy Webb Road. The driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to RMC Jacksonville as a precautionary measure, Bowden said.
The cause of the accident is under investigation, Bowden said.
According to a Facebook post by Ken Bodiford, director of the JSU Marching Southerners, Carter was a freshman member of the Ballerinas dance line. She had marched her first performance with the Southerners Thursday, Bodiford wrote.
“There are no words to describe the pain that we all feel or the sadness we share with her family,” Bodiford wrote. “Our Southerners family was blessed to have her in our midst and we will think of her as we enter the field for every performance.”
