St. Johns County, FL : Couple hospitalized with serious injures after they were involved in a three-car crash along Interstate 95 on early Saturday morning , February 7th 2015

A young woman was critically injured on Wednesday afternoon in a crash that tied up the already congested Southwest 34th Street through the evening rush hour.

At 4:08 p.m., emergency crews were called to the intersection of 34th Street and Southwest 19th Avenue after a collision between a gas-powered scooter and a car. Paramedics from Alachua County Fire Rescue arrived minutes later and took the critically injured scooter driver to UF Health Shands Hospital under a term known as a trauma alert, which warrants the most urgent response. Her passenger suffered less serious injuries, said Officer Ben Tobias, a Gainesville Police Department spokesman.

The driver of the car, a Chevrolet sedan, was not injured.

The names of the occupants of the scooter and Chevrolet were not available as of Wednesday night.

So far, damage patterns and witnesses have led GPD officers to believe the collision occurred when the driver of the Chevrolet, which was northbound on 34th, attempted a left turn onto 19th Avenue and drove the car into the path of the southbound scooter. The front passenger side door of the car was badly impacted and the door window was shattered.

The Chevrolet rolled to a stop on 19th and the crushed scooter was left in a heap in the right lane of 34th, forcing GPD to close the lane through Wednesday’s evening rush hour.

Traffic on southbound 34th Street was backed up to West University Avenue as notoriously heavy traffic negotiated the bottleneck created by the crash, which was processed by the GPD Traffic Homicide Investigations due to the severity of the injuries sustained by the scooter driver.
