Oakland Park, FL : Two people injured after a Woman crashes into Oakland Park pizza shop on Thursday, March 17, 2016
Police are investigating after a woman crashed her SUV into an Oakland Park pizza shop, sending two people to the hospital.
According to officials, the crash happened just before midnight at the Downtown Pizza Grill, along Cypress Creek Road and Northeast Ninth Avenue. The owner said this is the third time a driver has crashed into their restaurant.
One witness said he was just a few feet away, in another parking spot, waiting to grab a delivery when he saw the crash. "I heard an engine just flat out go full speed ahead and watched this car go through the window," said Paul Aaronson, "never tried to stop, never hit the brake."
Police said 70-year-old Dina Nolan slammed through the front windows of the restaurant, ending up completely inside. Crews worked overnight to remove the car from the shop. "It was just like, she let go of the gas and then pressed it again and just floored it," said Felicia Nesbitt, who was hurt in the crash.
Both she and her fiancé, Pietro Leone, were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for their injuries.
"One woman was bleeding from the face," said Aaronson. "Another gentleman also looked very groggy, and he was also cut."
7News caught up with the victims as they were released from the hospital. Leone said he was at the counter ordering a pizza, when, all of a sudden, he saw the SUV coming towards him. He then said he pushed his fiancé out of the way just in the nick of time. "It just plowed right through the glass," he said. "I pushed my fiancé out the way, and I took the full force of the car, pinned me up against the counter in there."
The two have several stiches and banages covering cuts and bruises. Leone also said he plans on filing a lawsuit against the driver. "We're gonna do something about that," he added. "I've already got my mom trying to get in contact with some lawyers and get something done because if she's just gonna get away scott free for putting two people in the hospital, she could've killed us."
While the crash left the business bashed up, it left Aaronson shaken up. "It's unbelievable," he said. "It looks like it happens in slow motion, you don't even have a chance to blink, shows you how precious life is in a matter of a second."
Nesbitt, said another woman allegedly took advantage of their situation and took her wallet after she was transported to the hospital. The woman wasn't taken to the hospital and claimed the wallet as her own after the accident happened.
"Just like what I feared," said Nesbitt. "She walked off, so I thought she was OK ... I guess now she got my wallet."
The two are fortunate to tell the story. However, Nesbitt still feels unlucky. "It's sad to say, but this isn't a one-time thing. It's always occuring. We're seeing more and more of this happening," said Nesbitt.
According to officials, Nolan, did not suffer any serious injuries. She was placed in the back of a police car, but it remains unclear if she will face any charges.
