Newport News, VA : Two dead and one with serious injuries after crash in James City County on Saturday, August 26, 2017
Two people died, and one was transported to a hospital with life-threatening injuries Saturday morning after a car accident in James City County, police said.
At about 1:30 a.m. police arrived at the 10000 block of Old Stage Road and found that a 1999 Mercury Grand Marquis had hit a tree, according to a police news release. The driver, Amos Phillips, 30, of West Point, was pronounced dead at the scene, the release said. A backseat passenger, Candyce Hayden, 17, of Shacklefords, was transported to Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond where she died a few hours later, according to police.The front-seat passenger, a 21-year-old man also from Shacklefords, was flown to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries, the release said.
Phillips and Hayden were not wearing seat belts, and the 21-year-old was wearing a seat belt, the release said.
Alcohol is believed to have been a factor in the accident, police said. The accident is under investigation.
