Newport News, VA : One person killed in tractor-trailer wreck on an I-664 ramp early Tuesday morning, July 12, 2016

One person died in a tractor-trailer accident on Interstate 664 southbound in Newport News, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Michelle Anaya.

The crash closed multiple ramps on I-664. The 23rd and 26th Street ramps were closed after the crash and reopened about 7 a.m. The 35th Street ramp was reopened about 11 a.m., when VDOT reported the scene cleared.

The accident occurred about 2:45 a.m. when the driver was traveling south at a high speed and tried to take the 35th Street exit ramp, Anaya said. The tractor-trailer, a 2014 Freight Liner fully-loaded with cardboard boxes, hit the impact barrier wall and continued down the jersey wall until it overturned onto its side, Anaya said. The wreckage ended up past the 28th Street overpass.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was killed on impact after he was ejected from the tractor-trailer, according to Anaya.

Police identified the driver as 61-year-old Wendell Ross Loflin of the 1700 block of Gum Avenue in Gottoes, Va. Anaya said his family has been notified. It is not known if alcohol played a factor in the crash.

Anaya said state police is working the incident.
