Joplin, MO : Three motorists injured in accident on Interstate 49 in Newton County on Saturday, May 7, 2016

Three motorists were injured in a single-vehicle accident at 4:10 p.m. Saturday on Interstate 49, about 3 miles south of Joplin in Newton County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The injured were identified as Jose Lopez, 56, of Neosho, driver of the northbound pickup truck, and passengers Lea Lopez, 3, also of Neosho, and Maria Santellano, 48, of Los Angeles, California. All of the victims were taken to Freeman Hospital West in Joplin.

The accident occurred, the patrol reported, when a tire blew out and the truck ran off the road into the median and overturned.

A La Russell resident was seriously injured at about 12:45 a.m. Saturday when he was struck by a tractor-trailer rig on Missouri Highway 96, about 8 miles east of Avilla in Lawrence County, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The pedestrian was identified as Bill R. Davis, 34. He was taken to Mercy Hospital Springfield. Rodney D. Janes, 53, of Aurora, was the driver of the westbound truck.

The patrol reported that the accident occurred when Davis walked into the path of the truck rig.
