A Waynesboro man died Friday morning when a motorcycle he was driving collided with a car at the intersection of Route 254 and Old White Bridge Road north of Waynesboro.

The crash occurred at about 6:15 a.m., according to the Virginia State Police, which is in charge of the investigation.

Killed in the collision was Steven T. Fisher, 53, of Waynesboro.

Police say Fisher was thrown from the 2016 Harley-Davidson he was operating. He was headed northwest on Route 254 at the time of the collision, according to state police.

The route is a well-traveled, two-lane state road used by motorists heading to and from Waynesboro, New Hope, Crimora and Staunton.

The crash, whcih took place two to three miles outside of Waynesboro, occurred after a 2015 Ford Edge traveling southwest on Old White Bridge Road tried to cross over 254. As it did so, however, it ended up right in the path of the oncoming motorcycle.

Police say the driver of the Ford, Stephanie C. Groves, 59, of Waynesboro, had stopped at the stop sign at Old White Bridge's intersection with 254. But she then attempted to cross the highway just as the motorcycle was approaching, police say. Groves was charged with failure to yield.

The motorcycle was unable to avoid the Ford and struck it in the driver's side. Fisher was wearing a helmet, but died at the scene, according to police.
Groves was not injured in the crash.
