Shelby,NC : 80 year old killed in wreck on May,Friday 25th 2018

One man was killed and two were injured in a wreck over the holiday weekend.

Paul Kenneth Hipps, 80, of Shelby, was pronounced dead at the scene after he failed to stop at a four-way stop sign at the intersection of Carol Street and N.C. 18, according to N.C. Highway Patrol.

The wreck occurred around 3:50 p.m. Friday. The man allegedly missed the stop sign as he turned left onto the highway in his Nissan Altima and was struck by an oncoming vehicle on the driver’s side.

A passenger in the Nissan and the driver of the other car were taken to Carolinas HealthCare System Cleveland with non-life threatening injuries.

According to his obituary, Hipps was a retired first sergeant after serving 20 years in the United States Army and served one tour in Korea and two tours in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.

Hipps leaves behind his wife of 50 years, Judith Hipps, a son, three daughters and eight grandchildren. His funeral was Tuesday.
