West Yarmouth, MA : 17-year-old crashes dad's SUV in Yarmouth on Wednesday night on July 9, 2014
West Yarmouth, Massachusetts
A teenager who allegedly wrecked his father's car Wednesday night in a dramatic crash that left a trail of debris more than 100 feet long faces charges including operating negligently so as to endanger, leaving the scene of a crash that caused property damage and unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.
The 17-year-old, whose name was not made public because of his age, allegedly took his father's Ford Expedition, which was spotted swerving on and off the road and traveling fast along Berry Avenue, Silver Leaf Lane and Tabor Road in West Yarmouth. At 7:17 p.m., the SUV, which had Florida plates, rolled over several times “side to side and back to front” and came to rest at the intersection of Exeter and Tabor roads, according to a Yarmouth police statement.
Witnesses told police two men freed themselves from the wreckage and ran from the scene.
The vehicle had extensive damage, which included a debris field consisting of several thousand nails, other construction debris from the car's interior and various vehicle parts, the police statement says.
On scene, the car's battery had been tossed 20 feet from the wreck and acid leaked onto the pavement, which was a canvas of skidmarks. Bolts and hardware littered the street. A green baseball hat was among debris that was tossed from the car.
“Based on the massive amount of damage, as well as the presence of blood in the vehicle, it was apparent that the two occupants who fled the scene were most likely injured,” the statement says.
One woman who lives in the quiet beach community said she heard the accident from several houses away.
“I was watching the news when I heard a bang,” Judy Green said. “It was loud and fast.”
A K-9 unit was brought in, and an investigating officer located a cellphone left in the SUV.
Yarmouth officers met at a nearby motel with the car's owner, who reported that his son had taken the vehicle. Police met with the son and his friend at the hotel and the son admitted to being the driver. Both young men had non-life-threatening injuries. They were treated on scene and brought to Cape Cod Hospital.
“It was a serious accident,” police Sgt. John Fallon said Wednesday night. “They're pretty lucky.”
Fallon said the SUV appeared to have rolled over several times before crashing into a tree.
The Yarmouth Highway Division was called out to sweep the street based on the large debris field, police said.
