Elon, N.C : 16-year-old killed when car flips after hitting ditch on Sockwell Drive on Tuesday evening, August 23, 2016

A 16-year-old is dead and an 18-year-old is in critical condition after a crash in Elon, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

The wreck happened around 7:30 Tuesday evening on Sockwell Drive.

Master Trooper Christopher Knox says 16-year-old Dakota French was speeding when he veered off the road and crashed into a ditch. The car flipped over on its roof.

Dakota French was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper Knox says Dakota’s cousin, 18-year-old Jimmy French, was in the passenger seat. He was taken to Moses Cone Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
