Edgewater, MD : One person dead and two people injured after a three vehicle head-on crash near Swallow Lane on Sunday afternoon, February 14, 2016

A three vehicle head-on crash in Edgewater left one person dead and two people with serious injuries Sunday afternoon.

Around 4:26 p.m. police officers responded to the crash at Solomons Island Road near Swallow Lane. Witnesses said a 2002 Toyota Camry was northbound when it crossed the centerline and hit a 2011 Honda Civic heading southbound near the shoulder of the road. A 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, which was also headed southbound behind the Honda, then hit both cars and caused the Honda to overturn, county police said.

The driver of the Honda, Daniel Amos, 21, of California, Maryland, was declared dead by the Anne Arundel County Fire Department at the scene and was taken to the Medical Examiner's office in Baltimore. The passenger in the Honda, Kayla Amos, 20, also of California, Maryland, was taken to Shock Trauma with critical injuries, county police said.

The driver of the Toyota, Lauren Scott, 27, of Edgewater, was also taken to Shock Trauma with serious injuries, county police said. The driver of the Ford, Joseph Smith, 32, of Georgetown, Delaware, had minor injures but refused treatment.

Police said the preliminary cause of the crash looks to be the failure of the Toyota to remain right of the center. Alcohol and speeding don't appear to be contributing factors.

Traffic Safety is handling the investigations and charges are under review by the States Attorney, police said.
