York County ,SC :One teen dead, another injured, after thrown from ATV on Sunday ,July 26th 2015

One teenager is dead and another in the hospital after a weekend crash involving a four-wheeler and a pickup truck.

The driver of the four-wheeler was identified as 17-year-old Dalton Wright, of Hickory Grove, South Carolina. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the York County Coroner.

A 17-year-old, identified by troopers as Gregory Thompson of Gastonia, was on the back of the four-wheeler and was also injured. He was flown to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. Dalton's family told WBTV Monday that Thompson is doing better, and is expected to be released from the hospital this week.

Neither teen was wearing a helmet, according to officials, and both were ejected from the ATV.

A teenage driver of the pickup truck and their 49-year-old passenger were uninjured.

The incident happened just before 5:30 Saturday afternoon on Goose Hollow Road. It's unclear what led up to the crash, but SC Highway Patrol said they are investigating to see what happened.

Wright’s father told WBTV the family began planning the funeral Monday. He said his son had just traded his dirt bike for the ATV the week before the accident.

Dalton just completed his first year at the York School District and was also working there this summer. Co-workers had plans to finish a project with him Monday, until they learned of the tragic news over the weekend.

T.J. Willis worked with Wright and said the two enjoyed talking about riding on the all terrain vehicles.

“Talked about 4-wheelers in general. He loves to ride, I love to ride. It’s something we both shared and that helped the working,” Willis said. "It’s just a shock, you know. You don’t think of a 17-year-old kid not being here in the next day.”

Willis says Wright was one of the best student workers they’ve ever had. He said Wright was eager to learn the tricks and trades of construction and a joy to everyone he met.

“Great personality from the get go, you know - smiled. He was the first one here in the mornings, every morning,” Willis said.
