Chesnee, SC : Father was high, speeding before crash that killed 2-year-old child on Tuesday, November 11, 2014
Troopers said the father who was driving and crashed into a tree in Gaffney, killing his 2-year-old daughter, has been arrested.
The crash occurred around 3:15 p.m. on Tuesday along White Plains Road near Crenshaw Road when the car ran off the right side of the road, hitting a sign and trash can before colliding with a tree, according to the coroner.
Coroner Dennis Fowler said the other three people in the car, including the girl's father, a 5-year-old and a 6-year-old child, were transported to the hospital. Their condition is unknown at this time.
Fowler said she was riding in a booster car seat in the rear seat of the Chevrolet Cruze, but it was not the proper type of seat for her age and size.
According to Fowler, she had not graduated to the type of seat she was sitting in and should have still been in a 3-point car seat. He said the other two children were in the correct types of seats and wants to remind parents to make sure children are properly restrained to ensure their safety in the event of an accident.
Troopers said Curtis McCraw, 26, was driving and was later arrested and charged with reckless homicide. He is being held at the Cherokee County Detention Center.
At a bond hearing on Wednesday, McCraw was given a $25,000 surety bond and was ordered to not drive a car. The solicitor said at the hearing that McCraw was driving at a high rate of speed when he ran off the road.
According to the solicitor, McCraw got a ticket earlier in the day for going 83 mph in a 55 mph zone and he had been smoking marijuana.
The solicitor said McCraw was trying to get the child to sit down when the wreck happened. He also said the child was too small for the booster seat.
Highway Patrol said they are investigating the crash.
Fowler said this is the 14th traffic death this year in the county.
