Cranston, R.I : Three injured in fiery four-car wreck on Rt. 37 in Cranston on Thursday afternoon, December 18, 2014
Three people were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after a four-vehicle accident on Route 37 West near Pontiac Avenue Thursday afternoon.
The crash, which occurred around 12:27 p.m., closed Route 37 West and the entrance ramp from Interstate 95 roughly for 30 minutes, according to Captain William Jamieson of the R.I. State Police. All lanes were reopened roughly an hour later.
The crash occurred when a vehicle stopped suddenly because of traffic and was rear-ended, sending it into a third vehicle that had stopped in front of it. A fourth vehicle hit then collided with the existing pileup.
The middle two vehicles caught on fire and were totaled Jamieson said.
The three people taken to area hospitals were all drivers of their respective vehicles, but did not appear to be seriously hurt, Jamieson said.
