Hayfield,VI : Driver killed in Frederick scooter crash identified as Arizona man on June, Tuesday 13th 2017
A 56-year-old man was killed after he lost control of his motor scooter on Northwestern Pike (U.S. 50) in Frederick County, about 1:40 p.m. Monday, police said.
Virginia State Police Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler identified the man this afternoon as Paul Augustine Kosco, 56, of Prescott, Ariz.
The crash occurred in the eastbound lanes of Northwestern Pike, about two-tenths of a mile west of Hayfield Road (Route 600). The man lost control on a downhill stretch that curves sharply to the right. The man and the Lance Duke Touring 150-cubic-centimeter scooter he was riding slid about 30 yards east of where he fell. He was taken to Winchester Medical Center, where he died at approximately 2:20 p.m., Tyler said.
No one else was seriously injured in the crash, but a driver who stopped on the shoulder to render aid told The Star he narrowly avoided being hit by a descending truck as he walked toward the rider. The man, who wouldn’t give his name, had a superficial cut on his chest. He said he had to dive over a guardrail to avoid being struck.
A car at the scene had substantial rear-end damage, but it was unclear how it had been damaged.
Trooper J.T. Hutchinson is investigating the crash. He was assisted at the scene by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, Frederick County Fire and Rescue officials and the Gore Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company.
The death was the fifth on Frederick County roads since April 1 and the second motorcycle/motor scooter death. On April 18, a 56-year-old Missouri man was killed on Northwestern Pike when his motorcycle was hit by a tractor-trailer.
