A 21-year-old man who was hit by a vehicle last week has died, according to family members.

Family of Jesse Martinez III are still processing the incident; he had been on life support following the crash last week. He died late Tuesday night, his aunt Kat Salazar told the Caller-Times on Wednesday.

"It is a big shock to the family... He is only 21 and he would have been 22 this month," Salazar said.

To help his mother with expenses, including a proper memorial service, Salazar created a GoFundMe account.

Salazar describes Martinez as funny and the life of the party.

"He (has) always been a kind, loving person," Salazar said.

She said Martinez, who has four young children, was hit while he was walking home Feb. 7.

Corpus Christi police responded to a major accident that night in the 5200 block of state Highway 286 around 6:26 p.m.

Lt. J.C. Hooper said a pedestrian wearing dark clothing stepped onto the road and was hit by a vehicle. He was transported to Christus Spohn Hospital Shoreline for life-threatening injuries, Hooper said.

Hooper said the driver of the vehicle was not cited and did not show signs of intoxication.
