Seal Beach, CA : Teen killed in a hit and run crash at Southern California On Monday, August 15th, 2016
The president of the Hillsborough City School District Board said his family is grieving after one of his two daughters was killed and the other seriously injured in a crash Monday in Southern California.
"We are devastated by the loss of our sweet, smart, and kind daughter, Kendra, and are focused on helping our older daughter, Kayla, heal from her traumatic injuries," Don Geddis, 49, said in a prepared statement. "We are
grateful to the community for the outpouring of support."
Geddis, who was seriously injured in the crash, is president of the Hillsborough City School District Board.
Kendra Geddis, 10, who died in the mishap, was slated to start the sixth-grade and her sister, Kayla Geddis, 13, who was seriously injured, is an eighth-grader, Hillborough City School District Superintendent Anthony Ranii
said Tuesday.
CHP officers arrested the driver of the car that struck them, Adam Kanas, 36, of San Clemente, on suspicion of driving under the influence and second-degree murder, according to CHP Officer Tom Joy.
Kanas, who was uninjured in the crash, was being held Tuesday in the Orange County Jail on $1 million bail.
"The loss of a child is a tragedy beyond our understanding," Ranii said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire Hillsborough City School District, we extend our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Geddis family as they grieve
through this tragedy. We are a close community, and everyone in the district will be there to support the Geddis family in the difficult days ahead."
Around 9:20 a.m. Monday, a California Highway Patrol officer was searching for the driver of a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe reported to possibly be impaired when he came upon the collision near the Seal Beach Boulevard exit on
northbound Interstate 405, according to a report from Joy.
The Tahoe traveling northbound swerved into the carpool lane and struck the rear of a 2015 Tesla carrying Don Geddis, who was driving, and his daughters, who were in the back seat, the report says. The impact sent the
Tesla into the rear of a Honda Civic, killing Kendra Geddis. Don Geddis is in fair condition and Kayla Geddis is in serious condition at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.
