A woman died early Monday morning in Racine County after she was hit by a truck as she chased her dog.
"I'll blame myself for the rest of my life," Charlotte Rodriguez said through tears as she remembered her friend.
Rodriguez was with the victim, whose name was not publicly released by early afternoon, as they tried to find the woman's dog, Jax.
Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling said the 43-year-old woman was hit just after 3 a.m. on the 15800 block of Durand Avenue. That stretch of roadway is also known as Highway 11.
The mother of a recent high school graduate was taken to All Saints Hospital in Racine where she was pronounced dead.
"You really get that feeling inside that you coudd have done something but you weren't there," Rodriguez cried. "You just wish you were there."
The incident blocked traffic in both directions between 56th Road and 59th Drive for several hours. The roadway was reopened to traffic at about 6:45 a.m.
The driver of the tractor-trailer remained on the scene and was cooperating with the investigation, Schmaling said.
"At this time it appears that this is an unfortunate accident," he said.
Jax was unharmed.
