High speed and alcohol were factors in a single-car crash near Boulder Reservoir that killed the driver and hospitalized two passengers early Wednesday morning, Colorado State Patrol said.
The accident was reported at 6:20 a.m., and took place at the T-intersection of 55th Street and Monarch Road, just north of the reservoir.
“The vehicle was westbound on Monarch Road,” Trooper Josh Lewis said, “when the driver failed to stop at a stop sign at Monarch and 55th, went though the intersection and collided basically headfirst into a tree, at which point the vehicle caught on fire.”
The two passengers — Vanessa Padilla, 22, of Arvada and Antonio Ibarra, 18, of Longmont — managed to escape the car, but the driver, an unidentified 20-year-old man from Lafayette, was declared dead on the scene.
“Because of the way the decedent was found, we're having some difficulties and obstacles identifying him,” said Cody Talbot of the Boulder County Coroner's Office.
State Patrol deemed the injuries to Padilla and Ibarra “serious,” though Lewis said it wasn't clear whether they were life-threatening.
The crash was reported by a passing motorist, but police said they don't know exactly what time the crash happened.
The car involved in the crash, a 2014 Chevy sedan, suffered heavy fire and front-end damage. It was towed from the scene about three hours after the crash.
The now-scorched tree hit by the car was still smoldering when the car was towed.
