A South Lake Tahoe police officer, his wife and a family friend were killed in a single-vehicle crash in Nevada while on a family trip, but the couple's four children survived, according to the police department.
Officer Mark Hounsell was in the car with his wife, Jeanne, their four children and an adult family friend when the vehicle flipped Saturday near Fallon, Nevada, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department said.
"This tragedy shocks the entire police department, Mark's friends and all who knew this fine family," the department said in a released statement.
The crash prompted officers to close all lanes of Highway 50 in Churchill County for a number of hours.
The couple's four children suffered various injuries, but were expected to recover, police said.
The name of the family friend was not released until next of kin was notified.
There is no word on what caused the crash.
Hounsell had been an officer with the South Lake Tahoe Police Department since May 2007.
More details will be released about the funeral plans and ways for people to pay their respects in the coming days.
