Maryville, TN : Man still critical after two-vehicle crash on U.S. 411 South on Friday afternoon, February 10, 2017

A Maryville man was still in critical condition Saturday following a two-vehicle crash Friday afternoon on U.S. 411 South.
Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said John Hitchcock, 65, Lynn Drive, was taken by ambulance to University of Tennessee Medical Center following the crash near Sundance Road on Friday afternoon, where he was in critical condition.
Police and hospital staff confirmed Saturday evening that Hitchcock was still listed as critical.
Crisp said Hitchcock was driving a Toyota Tacoma west on U.S. 411 South when he was hit by a pickup truck pulling a trailer.
The second truck, a Ford F-150 driven by Joseph Vernetti, 52, Peppermint Hill Drive, Maryville, was traveling east on U.S. 411 South pulling a trailer with a small Bobcat bulldozer at the time of the crash.
Crisp said Vernetti’s truck was just east of Garwood Lane when the trailer he was towing began to sway violently. Vernetti lost control and traveled into the oncoming lanes, colliding with Hitchcock’s truck.
The crash occurred at around 3:55 p.m., Crisp said, and police had to shut down the road for just under two hours.
While it was initially believed Vernetti and Hitchcock were the only occupants involved, Vernetti did have a passenger, Crisp said. Neither Vernetti nor his passenger were hurt, police said.
Crisp said everyone involved was wearing a seat belt. Air bag deployment was reported in Hitchcock’s vehicle, but no air bags were available in Vernetti’s truck, Crisp said.
Drugs or alcohol are not believed to be a factor, and no citations were immediately issued. Crisp said the investigation is ongoing.
