Medford, OR : Pedestrian in I-5 crash has died on Friday, March 24th 2017
The man who was struck by a tractor trailer while standing in the Interstate 5 slow lane early Friday evening has died.
Oregon State Police Sgt. Kyle Hove confirmed that the pedestrian died of his injuries, though little additional information was available.
Information about circumstances behind the crash and the pedestrian's name are anticipated later tonight, Hove said, once troopers involved in the investigation come on duty.
Markings and measurements made during the investigation showed that the victim had been standing well inside the freeway slow lane just past the Exit 33 on-ramp, roughly a yard away from the fog line, at the time he was hit. Trooper Zane Grout and Mercy Flights administered first aid to the man on the scene, and he was alive when he was rushed to a nearby hospital, according to previous reports. Others involved in the rescue effort included Jackson County Fire District 3 and the Oregon Department of Transportation.
Investigation of the crash closed Interstate 5 for close to two hours Friday, with traffic backing up two miles at one point. The initial call came in at 5:02 p.m., according to Emergency Communications of Southern Oregon records, and the Oregon Department of Transportation reopened the lane at 6:45.
