Polk City, FL : Ocoee man injured after a car crash on Interstate 4 near exit 48 in Polk County on Friday, July 15, 2016
A 49-year-old man was in critical but stable condition after a crash on Interstate 4 Friday that closed both sides of Interstate 4 during the investigation, the Polk County Sheriff's Office said.
About 12:30 p.m. Bryan Woolcok, of 1139 Vizcaya Road in Ocoee, was heading east on I-4 in a 2000 Dodge Caravan approaching the County Road 557 exit ramp when for unknown reasons his vehicle left the roadway, reports said.
His Dodge traveled about 700 feet in the grassy median that separates I-4 east and I-4 west, reports said. His vehicle struck the three-wire guardrail and stayed in the median until it came to a final rest.
Polk County Fire and Medic units arrived and provided emergency care until Woolcok was airlifted to Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center. He is in critical but stable condition, PCSO said.
There was no sign of braking on the roadway prior to the vehicle entering the grass and reports said witnesses said no other vehicles were involved in the crash.
The airbag in the vehicle did not deploy but Woolcok was wearing a seatbelt, reports said.
Impairment is not suspected to be a factor at this time in the investigation.
The Florida Department of Transportation arrived to repair the three-wire guardrail damaged during the crash.
Both sides of I-4 were reopened by 1:45 p.m., reports said.
