Springfield, MA : Teenager killed in struck and killed by a car on St. James Avenue on Saturday May 14th, 2016

Police have identified the teenager struck and killed by a car on St. James Avenue early Saturday morning as Taylor Street resident Zamir Sanders.
On Monday morning, balloons adorned a shrine to Sanders at the accident site that carried tributes from friends and family.
An online fundraising effort to help pay for burial costs, established by a man identifying himself as Sanders' father, had raised over $1,000 by Monday morning. "I miss you so much Zamir," the fundraising message reads in part.
Rosalee Denson, who was at the St. James Avenue shrine early Monday afternoon, said Sanders had two younger brothers who "adored him." Sanders was a close friend to her grandson, she said.
"He was a great kid, he was an awesome kid," Denson said. "A lot of people are hurting right now."
Police said Sanders, 16, and three friends were "horsing around" at the side of the road around 2:30 a.m. Saturday and that -- for reasons that remain unclear -- Sanders ended up on the ground in a southbound lane near Montclair Street.
Two drivers -- one heading north and one heading south -- saw him and stopped, police said. A third driver, though, slowed and then "proceeded around the car that was traveling south," striking Sanders and dragging him nearly 300 feet.
Police said the friends who were with Sanders banged on the car's windows to alert the driver; once she stopped, they fled. Police have since identified the teenagers and they are cooperating with the investigation.
The 41-year-old woman who struck Sanders is also cooperating with investigators and has not been cited, according to police.
"This case is still taking place and will not be concluded for several days," Springfield Police Sgt. John M. Delaney wrote in an update Monday morning.
Sgt. Mel Kwatowski and officer Robert Kalin of the Springfield Police Department's Traffic Division have been working on the case "around the clock," Delaney wrote.
