Las Animas County, CO : 1 dies in Las Animas area crash on Wednesday, 23rd January 2019

A 74-year-old Weston woman died Wednesday afternoon from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash in Las Animas County, according to the Colorado State Patrol.

Lupe Aragon was a passenger in a Chevrolet K1500 pickup truck driven by 76-year-old Joe Aragon, also of Weston, when the midafternoon accident occurred.

Aragon sustained minor injuries and was treated on-site, about 10 miles north of Segundo. Lupe Aragon was pronounced dead during the investigation.

According to trooper Tom DeAntonio, the accident happened when a 2006 Chevrolet Express heading west on County Road 30.1 approached a right-hand curve, began to brake and skidded into the path of the Chevrolet pickup.

The vehicles collided head-on. After impact, the Express, driven by 37-year-old Robert Lenk of Pueblo, rotated counter-clockwise and stopped on its wheels facing south. The pickup, continued south off the road, colliding with a barbed wire fence before also stopping on its wheels facing south.

Lenk was restrained by a seat belt at the time, and transported to Mount San Rafael Hospital in Trinidad for treatment of serious injuries.
