Wilkes-Barre,PA : W-B man cited for crash that killed Canadian officer on December, Thursday 14th 2017
Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania
A Wilkes-Barre man who caused a crash in Canada that killed a police officer won’t face criminal charges but has been issued traffic citations, according to Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
According to police, Vasiliy Meshko, 31, of Wilkes-Barre, was involved in a Sept. 12 crash in Memramcook, New Brunswick, that killed Nova Scotia-based Mounted Police Constable Frank Deschênes.
Police say that Deschênes had stopped along a highway to assist two people in a sport-utility vehicle change a tire when a utility van struck the police car and the SUV. Deschênes, 35, died at the scene, while the other motorists were taken to a hospital for treatment, according to police.
Meshko was also taken to a hospital for treatment prior to being released to police custody.
According to a statement police issued Thursday, a collision reconstructionist assisted investigators in the case, and they determined there was not enough evidence to proceed with criminal charges against Meshko.
However, he was cited for driving without due care and attention and failing to move over, police said. The statement said Meshko is set to enter a plea Friday.
Court records show Meshko has no criminal history in Pennsylvania but was cited for speeding in 2014.
