Bridgeport ,CT : Multi-vehicle crashinjures 2, damages 7 vehicles on Wednesday morning ,july 29th 2015
A multi-vehicle crash in front of the Connecticut Post building Wednesday morning caused pandemonium at a busy downtown intersection with two people injured and parts of cars scattered over the area.
Dozens of people came out of neighboring buildings with witnesses reporting the ground shook when the vehicles collided.
Miraculously, police and fire officials said no one was seriously injured.
Pedro Re, of Bridgeport, said he was stopped at the red light near 410 State St. with his teen-aged son and 6-year-old nephew in the car when they were struck from behind by a Buick sedan.
“It just happened so fast,” he said. “There was this crash and my car was spinning around and everything was going crazy.”
His car, a Mitsubishi sedan, ended up backward, its rear end crushed into a tree. His nephew was being treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The Buick also struck a parked van sending it driverless several hundred feet where it crashed into another parked car.
Police said a total of seven cars were involved.
Assistant Fire Chief Christopher Martin said the male driver of the Buick had to be cut out of his car.
“He appears to have only minor injuries, but we had to cut the roof off of the car to get him out," Martin said. That driver, who was not immediately identified, was taken to St Vincent’s Medical Center.
Ambulance crews, police and fire responded within minutes.
Two drivers whose cars were the last in the line of seven to be struck said they were thankful the accident wasn’t worse.
“I was in the left lane going maybe 35 miles an hour and she was in the right lane when all of a sudden I heard a screech of tires,” said Chris May, whose Honda CRV was struck on the back bumper. “I heard glass shattering and I got popped. It happened so fast.”
‘I saw out of the corner of my eye that they were flying into that tree or the pole or whatever and one car spun around and went in backwards,” said Kathy Alexander, who like May, was on her way to work in Bridgeport.
