New Milford's police chief was taken to a Torrington hospital Wednesday after an impaired driver caused his SUV to flip over in a three-car crash on Route 202, State Police said.

Police Chief Shawn Boyne, 50, was taken to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital where he was treated and released, according to New Milford Personnel Director Alan Chapin.

No further information was available Thursday on Boyne's condition.

Boyne, a retired commander of Connecticut State Police Troop L, became New Milford's police chief in 2010.

Boyne's New Milford police Ford Explorer was struck by a 2004 Ford truck driven by Gonzalo Valverde, 30, of Morris, who lost control of his vehicle about a mile east of Mount Tom State Park on Route 202 around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to State Police.

According to the report, Valverde was traveling westbound and crossed the double-yellow line into the oncoming eastbound traffic.
