STATEN ISLAND, NY : Car crashes through Dongan Hills storefront on Monday, 7th January 2019

A grey Hyundai Tucson crashed into the storefront of the Mathnasium Tutoring Center Monday night, sending one person to the hospital.

The individual sustained minor injuries in the 7:10 p.m. accident, an FDNY spokesman said, and was transported to Staten Island University Hospital’s north campus. One other individual on scene refused medical attention, according to the spokesman.Both FDNY and NYPD units responded to the scene, shutting down one lane of Richmond Road as the vehicle was removed from the building.

On scene, the car, which sustained front-end damage, could be seen inside the tutoring center as FDNY officers worked to clear debris from around the car.

Extensive damage was done to the tutoring center, which, according to an employee, was still in operation when the vehicle hit the building.

A Dunkin' Donuts employee said he heard a crash and glass shattering when the vehicle hit the building.

Further information regarding the cause of the accident is currently not available.
