NEW CASTLE, IN : Motorcyclist severely injured in New Castle crash on Wednesday, 22nd April, 2020
A crash along Ind. 3 Wednesday night left a motorcyclist with severe head injuries.
At 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Indiana State Police Trooper J.T. Burns witnessed a southbound car on Ind. 3 turning left onto Trojan Lane, directly into the path of an oncoming motorcycle that was northbound on Ind. 3, according to an ISP release.
The motorcycle tried but was unable to avoid the car, colliding with the front of the car and ejecting the rider, Gerald Hammond, 55, New Castle. Hammond, who was not wearing a helmet, was airlifted to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with severe head injuries, according to the release. The hospital reported he remained in critical condition as of early Thursday afternoon.
The car's driver, Kaitlyn Snyder, 18, Knightstown, was uninjured.
ISP noted that a leading cause of motorcycle crashes nationwide is cars making a left-hand turn into the path of an oncoming motorcycle.
