SILOAM SPRINGS, AR : Boy dies after driver crashes into fountain in Siloam Springs on Wednesday, 9th January 2019

An 11-year-old boy has died after a drunk driving crash into a fountain in Siloam Springs, according to Nathan Smith, Benton County Prosecutor.

Tim Hornbuckle is the principal of Siloam Springs Intermediate School. He says more than 600 5th and 6th graders attend the school, and for many this was their first time to experience loss.Hornbuckle and his team began the day by carefully telling the students what had happened. He went to each classroom one by one to let the students know that it was OK to feel what they were feeling.

“We wanted students to know that, it’s ok to laugh if you have a fun memory. It’s ok to cry and it’s ok to be upset," said Hornbuckle. "No matter how you process that we wanted our counselors to walk students through that kind of explain to them – we’re dealing with 10 and 11-year-olds and like you said, that’s the first time they might have dealt with the topic of death.”

At about 10 p.m. Thursday, police arrived on scene at the fountain near Main Street and U.S. Highway 412 (near Carpet One) where they found a vehicle overturned and submerged in the water, according to Steff Jones, Communications Specialist for the Siloam Springs Police Department.
