“I’m going to miss her laugh. That’s my baby, that’s my baby,” said Jayla Fryar, Young’s sister.
Young’s mother wiped tears from her eyes as she told reporters that the busy street is too dangerous for pedestrians.
“There needs to be something here, a crosswalk, a light, something,” Mary Fryar said.
WBTV cameras saw several pedestrians cross the street without any protection, dodging the fast-moving cars along West Blvd.
The only crosswalks are at stoplights along that area of West Blvd are beyond the crash site. One is at the intersection of West and Clanton, the other by West and Old Steele Creek Rd.
“It’s a lot of little kids that stay over here, and if they don’t want to see a lot of people lose their life, they need to put a stoplight up here,” said Jayla Frayr.
Leaders with the Charlotte Department of Transportation said there have been no crashes involving pedestrians at the crash site in the past five years.
However, CDOT said West Blvd is on the list for a traffic study to make it safer for pedestrians.
For family members of Ty’Asia Young, even one death is too many.
“I want her to know that I love her, and just save me a stop up there, because I will be there,” said Jayla Fryar.
CMPD is still investigating the crash. CDOT will analyze history in the area once the report is finished.
Citizens with concerns about intersections can call 311.
