Union County ,NC : Driver charged in crash that killed 16-year-old on Saturday night ,July 11th 2015
One person is facing charges after a 16-year-old girl died in a crash Saturday night in Union County, officials said.
Kemthia Garlins, 20, was charged with DWI after Autumn Plyler died in the single-car wreck at Lancaster Highway and Big Horne Road. Plyler was not wearing a seat belt. She was sitting on someone’s lap in the middle of the rear seat, authorities said.
Troopers said seven people were in the 2011 Dodge Nitro SUV; five were transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Officials said Garlins ran off the road to the right and tried to overcorrect. She ran off the centerline and overcorrected again before hitting a tree.
Officials are waiting for blood test results to determine if there will be additional charges.
Witnesses said the driver of the vehicle was airlifted to the hospital
