Bardstown,KY : Several injured in parkway crash on May,Saturday 26th 2018
Several people were injured, at least two critically, when a car cross the median into the eastbound lanes of the Bluegrass Parkway Saturday evening and hit a van almost head-on.
Nelson County Dispatch got the call at 7:09 p.m., and local sheriff’s deputies, emergency medical personnel and firefighters responded. However, the accident occurred just over the Washington County line around the 40 and 41 mile markers.
The two people in critical condition were flown by helicopter, including a 4-year-old girl who was first transported by Nelson County EMS to Flaget Memorial Hospital in Bardstown and then to University of Louisville Hospital, and a woman who was flown to University of Kentucky Hospital in Lexington.
According to Deputy Ian Justice of the Washington County Sheriff's Office, there were eight people involved in the accident, four adults and four children. Three people were in the car and five in the van. One of those in the car was a child, and three of the passengers in the van were children.
Justice said just before 6 p.m. that all but one of the patients from the van had been released, but all three from the car were still in the hospital.
There were no fatalities.
Justice said he could not release the identities of those involved until his office issued a press release.
According to Nelson County EMS, two patients refused to be transported.
Justice said the accident had not been reconstructed, but it appeared that it may have been weather-related. There was a cloudburst just before the accident, and the car may have hydroplaned.
Asst. Chief Scott Thompson of the Northeast Nelson Fire Protection District also didn’t know what caused the accident, but it appeared that the worst impact was to the passenger side of the car, which came to rest in the roadway. The van ended up against a rock wall.
The eastbound lanes were closed for some time while emergency medical personnel treated patients on the scene and prepared them for transport.
Dennis Wells was one of the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office deputies on the scene, but the Washington County sheriff was handling the investigation.
Other agencies present were Washington County Rescue and the Willisburg Fire Department.
