A cyclist struck by an SUV Friday afternoon suffered severe head trauma and died at Park Ridge Health not long after, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Paul Brent Yingling, 71, of Fletcher was riding northbound on Whispering Hills Drive ahead of his brother-in-law at 3:27 p.m. when he turned right onto Howard Gap Road into the path of a Jeep Wrangler, said Trooper M.B. Lowry.

Yingling had a head injury and was taken to Park Ridge Health, where he died about 20 minutes later, Lowry said.
