Madison County, MS : Man dead, wife critical after car hits and kills 5 horses near Goodloe Road in Madison County on Monday, December 12, 2016

A man is dead and his wife is critical condition after being involved in a crash that also killed five horses.

At 9:30 p.m., Mississippi Highway Patrol responded to MS 43 near Goodloe Road in Madison County after getting a call about an accident involving five horses and a car.

A Chrysler 300 was going south on MS 43 when the car hit the horses that were standing in the road. According to Trooper Eric Henry, the driver, 50-year-old Carlton Trunnell of Canton, and his wife, had to be cut out of the car with the jaws of life and airlifted to UMMC.

Authorities say that Trunnell died on the way to the hospital and his wife is in critical condition.

All five horses were also killed on scene. MDOT says that they made sure the owner of the horses, Kay Pace of Madison County, was aware of the situation.

They are working to get the dead horses off the road.
