FREDERICK, MD : Frederick man dies in crash at I-70 and I-270 on Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

A Frederick motorist died in a three-vehicle collision that snarled eastbound traffic on Interstate 70 for hours Wednesday morning, according to Maryland State Police.

The victim was identified as Ross Jonathan Micheals, 40, a state police news release said.

The wreck, reported at 5:33 a.m., occurred as a 2002 Peterbilt tractor-trailer was heading east on I-70 on the ramp to southbound Interstate-270, police said in the release.

Due to heavy traffic, the driver braked, causing the trailer to jackknife into an adjoining lane, police said.

A gray 2003 Toyota Corolla was traveling in that lane, also merging onto I-270, with a white 2004 Ford F-150 pickup in front of the Toyota. Both vehicles were slowing because of the traffic, police said.

The jackknifing tractor-trailer struck the rear of the Toyota, causing the car to hit the rear of the pickup truck, police said.

Micheals, who was driving the Toyota, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The truck driver was taken to Frederick Memorial Hospital, treated for minor injuries then released, police said.

Police did not identify the truck driver or the person driving the pickup.

The wreck closed the ramp, as well as the right traffic lane and right shoulder of I-70, according to the Maryland State Highway Administration's CHART website.

The wreck caused a traffic backup that extended at times for at least five miles, the website said.
