Phoenix, AZ : Several injured following wrong-way crash involving 5 vehicles on Friday morning, October 17, 2014
It was a mess for commuters on I-10 near downtown Phoenix.
A wrong-way driver who authorities say was driving for 7 miles the wrong-way hit a driver head on and 3 other cars then hit the wreck.
A total of five cars crashed in the morning wreck.
"Helicopters were right on top of us and sirens are going and we're thinking something really bad must be going on on the freeway," said Maryln Windust.
The driver traveled at least 7 miles before hitting another driver head on. The first 911 call came in around the 143 and I-10.
That's just horrible, not again, how can that happen, especially when you said for 7 miles, how can that happen, it's very scary.
The crash happened about 2 o'clock this morning, and the I-10 eastbound in the west valley was shut down around 19th Avenue through the tunnel most of the morning.
"The driver of the wrong-way at fault vehicle is described as a 25 year-old female," said Officer Raul Garcia with DPS.
"DUI has not been ruled out at this time, DPS would like to remind the public to avoid distracted driving, the life you may be saving is your own," said Garcia.
