Las Vegas, NV : One woman died and another injured after five-vehicle crash near McCarran International Airport on Monday morning, Aug 10, 2015

One woman was killed and another injured Monday morning in a crash involving five vehicles near McCarran International Airport, Metro Police said.

Police were called to the scene of the crash near Sunset and Paradise roads about 8 a.m. The area remained closed to traffic most of Monday.

Evidence indicates the driver of a 2011 Honda Pilot, Angela Bashay, 39, was heading eastbound on Sunset approaching Paradise when she hit the rear of a 2003 Nissan Altima that was slowing to a stop at the intersection, police said in an accident report. The impact forced the Altima across the intersection and into a traffic signal pole.

The Pilot, meanwhile, overturned, skid and hit a 2007 Honda Civic that was stopped in the left turn lane to southbound Paradise. The impact forced the Civic into a 2015 Toyota Highlander and a 2011 Toyota Camry, which were both stopped at the intersection.

The Pilot continued sliding on its roof about 500 feet to its final resting spot near the entrance to the Post Office on the south side of Sunset.

Initially, police said a semitruck had caused the fatal collision. But Sgt. Richard Strader said that after reviewing security cameras from the Post Office, the truck was not involved.

Strader said the semitruck was traveling behind the Honda, which could have led witnesses to believe it caused the accident.

The women driving the Altima and Civic were taken to Sunrise Hospital, where the Altima driver died. The driver of the Civic suffered minor injuries, police said.

"It's a miracle that we didn't lose a lot more people," Strader said.

Criminal charges are anticipated pending the outcome of the investigation, police said.
