Longmont, CO : 46-year-old cyclist critical after collision with pickup on Tuesday evening, June 21, 2016

A 46-year-old Longmont cyclist who collided with a pickup at the intersection of Gay Street and 17th Avenue midday Tuesday remained in "very serious condition" on Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The man was transported by ambulance to Longmont United Hospital, where he is being treated for serious injuries, Jeff Satur, deputy police chief, said. Police did not release his name.

The pickup, driven by a 24-year-old man whom police have not identified, was headed west on 17th at the time of the collision, Satur said.

Police had not determined the direction the cyclist was headed, but the bicycle remained in the middle of intersection as police investigated midday Tuesday. The intersection was expected to be closed until about 6 p.m.

Drugs, alcohol and speed are not being considered a factor at this time, Satur said.

Joe Mejia, of Longmont, was driving east on 17th when he saw something happen ahead of him about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

"I'm a State Farm agent around the corner, so I was coming back to my office," Mejia said. "He had just hit the ground, so it had just occurred. I was looking, thinking, 'Why is everybody stopping?' You could just see something happen."

Mejia took photos from his car window of the cyclist, who was wearing street clothes, lying on the pavement.

The driver of the pickup, which has a GreenPoint Roofing sign on its side, appeared to be cooperating with law enforcement officers and first responders.

On her way to pick up three of her children at Northridge Elementary School, Samantha Ortega pulled into a residential driveway along 17th Avenue. She said she has witnessed drivers speeding through the intersection on multiple occasions.

"They need to have, seriously, cameras right there," Ortega said. "I've seen five. Two this year, and last year I've seen three."

Ross Lingle, of Longmont, said he was walking about a block away when he heard sirens. He said he has called police a few times in the past because the avenue has become a "drag strip."

"This road is just becoming a speedway," Lingle said.

He mentioned a collision in September 2014 that killed two women in the 1300 block of 17th Avenue.

Amy Clinton, who was walking Tuesday afternoon toward the corner of 17th Avenue with her 6-year-old son, said she worries about whether children are involved whenever she sees a crash or collision. She said her daughter, now 11, was hit by a car about six years ago on Lashley Street.
