Charlotte, NC : 11-year-old girl hit by car in north Charlotte while walking to bus stop on Tuesday morning, October 4, 2016

An 11-year-old girl was walking to the bus stop when she was hit by a car in north Charlotte Tuesday morning, according to the girl's grandmother, who was at the scene.

It happened around 7:30 a.m. on the 1600 block of LaSalle Street.

Medic says they took the pedestrian to Carolinas Medical Center with serious injuries.

Family at the scene identified the girl as Zion Massey, a student at Bruns Academy.

"I walked her to the road, trying to get her across the street, but she stepped out, and the car couldn't stop, it was driving so fast, she couldn't stop. She hit my grandbaby," said Doris Massey, Zion's grandmother. "My grandbaby went up in the air then down. I don't know what kind of injuries she has."

Family members fought back tears talking about the accident.

"I just couldn't imagine this on any child," said Anngell Massey, Zion's aunt.

Anngell Massey says Zion loved going to school and taking care of her younger siblings. Zion had just helped her younger siblings cross the street before she was hit.

Both Anngell and Doris Massey say this accident should not have happened in the first place.

They tell WBTV Zion's bus stop was moved a block away, which means she has to cross LaSalle Street to get to the stop. Before, she didn't have to cross the street, which family and neighbors say is a very busy road where people drive much faster than the speed limit.

"We was saying that was too dangerous for them to catch the bus up here. We're better off catching the bus down here," Anngell Massey said.

A CMS official says they are talking with the transportation department to find out more about this bus stop and accident.

The driver of the car who hit Zion has not been charged. CMPD has not said if speed was a factor in this accident.
