SCOTTSBURG, IN : Hearing today for man in chase crash fatal to officer on Monday, 17th December 2018
A man is due in court for allegedly starting a police pursuit that led to an officer’s car crash death. Benjamin James Eads, 35, is scheduled for a Monday afternoon initial hearing. Scott County Prosecutor Chris Owens says he expects to have formal charges filed against Eads before the hearing. The News and Tribune reports that Eads is being held on a $100,000 cash-only bond. Preliminary charges against Eads include resisting law enforcement causing death. Authorities say Eads fled a traffic stop on Dec. 12, prompting a police pursuit during which Charlestown Officer Benton Bertram’s vehicle struck a tree. Bertram was dead at the scene. State Police say the 33-year-old Bertram was a nine-year Charlestown Police Department veteran. Visitation for Bertram is from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at Charlestown High School, according to Grayson Funeral Home in New Washington. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at the same place.
