Ocala, FL : Ocala man killed and woman injured after single-vehicle crash on Saturday February 20 2016
An Ocala man was killed and a woman injured a single-vehicle crash Saturday morning in southwestern Marion County.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers identified the man as 24-year-old Joseph Deaton. His passenger, Angel Ward, 24 of Dunnellon, was taken by ambulance to Ocala Regional Medical Center. Troopers said she was conscious and alert.
Later Saturday morning, a spokeswoman at ORMC said Ward was listed in fair condition.
Troopers said Deaton was driving a white 1989 Toyota pickup southbound on Southwest 140th Avenue, when for an unknown reason, the truck went off the two-lane road and onto the west shoulder.
Deaton overcorrected and the vehicle careened to the east shoulder and went into the wood line. It struck some trees, overturned and ejected both Deaton and Ward, who officials said were not wearing their seat belts.
The vehicle finally came to a stop, leaning against a tree upside down on the driver's side. Deaton died yards away from the picku.
It was not known whether speed or alcohol contributed to the crash. According to troopers, Ward told fire rescue officials they were going fishing when accident occurred.
Troopers were notified of the crash at 6:15 a.m.
